Getting Around Paramaribo, Suriname: Taxis, Cars, and Moto-Bikes Explained

Paramaribo spreads out. The historic centre along the Waterkant is compact and walkable in the cool of the morning, but most of the city — Blauwgrond and Tourtonne to the north, Latour and Flora to the south, Kwatta and Uitvlugt to the west, Meerzorg across the river — is low, wide and hot, and a trip across it means wheels. Those wheels have traditionally been a bus from the Heiligenweg or a taxi from one of the centrales. Lately there are apps as well. If you're new to the city, or you've lived here your whole life and are tired of hearing one fixed tariff, here's a practical rundown of what's out there and where Intra Cab fits.

The buses

Paramaribo's buses are mostly privately owned minibuses running licensed routes — the PL buses, for particuliere lijnbus. They gather at the Heiligenweg, the bus station by the Centrale Markt and the Waterkant, and fan out across the city and into Wanica: to Blauwgrond, Kwatta, Latour, Zorg en Hoop, Lelydorp and the rest. You pay the driver in cash — a flat fare, whatever the distance along the line — and get off where you ask. The state NVB buses do the long hauls to Nickerie, Albina and the districts.

Buses are cheap and frequent on their routes during the day. They're fixed to those routes, they thin out in the evening, and they're not built for luggage or for a group. If your trip follows a line and you're not in a hurry, they're hard to beat.

The taxicentrales

The Paramaribo taxi is a centrale car. Ulstrel (1680) has been on the Hofstraat for nearly forty years and now has its own app; Hertog (1688) on the Hertogstraat takes calls and online bookings; Tourtonne's Taxi on the Tourtonnelaan runs round the clock with a fleet of more than a hundred cars. You call, the centrale quotes its tariff for the trip and sends one of its own drivers.

That's the strength: one number, a known tariff, a vetted driver, at any hour. The limits are the flip side of the same model. The tariff is the centrale's, not something you can compare against another offer, and the driver works for the centrale, which takes its share. Taxis here are not metered, so if you flag one on the street rather than calling a centrale, agree the price before you get in.

Moto-bikes and brommers

Suriname rides brommers — small motorcycles are everywhere, and they slip past the queue on the Kwattaweg and the Indira Gandhiweg in a way a car can't. What the city doesn't have much of is bikes carrying passengers for hire; it isn't the established trade it is in some countries. So a bike is the quickest way for a solo rider across town at rush hour, but a scarce one. Helmets for both rider and passenger.

Boats

Paramaribo sits on the Suriname River, and for a few trips the water is the sensible route. Boats run from Leonsberg across to Nieuw Amsterdam in Commewijne, and tour boats leave the Waterkant for the old plantations across the river. For getting to Meerzorg by car, it's the Jules Wijdenboschbrug — toll-free, high, and slow at seven in the morning when Commewijne drives in to work.

The ride apps

Uber, Bolt and Grab have never operated in Suriname. What's here is Ulstrel's own app, which books a centrale car at the centrale's tariff, and Intra Cab, which works differently — you post your trip and independent drivers each send you their own price. There's a Dutch comparison in taxi bestellen in Paramaribo: taxicentrale of app? The honest advice: keep 1680 or 1688 in your phone and Intra on it too. On a quiet evening the question is who has a car near you now.

Where Intra Cab fits

Intra Cab brings car, moto-bike and bus into one app with the negotiation already built in: drivers near you see your pickup and destination, send you a price in SRD, and you pick the one you want — with the driver's name, photo, vehicle and rating alongside. No centrale tariff and no surge multiplier, because no one but the driver sets the price; and no commission, so the driver keeps what you pay. The app works in Dutch — tap the flag at the top.

  • Car — the default for most trips, from a hop across the Centrum to the 45-kilometre run down the Martin Luther Kingweg to Johan Adolf Pengel airport at Zanderij, which is worth booking in advance.
  • Moto-bike — a solo rider's fastest option at rush hour, but bike drivers are scarce on the app, so expect to wait longer for an offer.
  • Bus — for a group travelling together who don't want to split into separate cars.

A few practical notes for Paramaribo

Cash is still king. Intra Cab is cash-only for now — you pay the driver in SRD when the trip ends, the same as any taxi here, just with the price agreed on the screen beforehand.

Peak times matter. The Wijdenboschbrug and the Indira Gandhiweg inbound from seven in the morning, the whole city around one o'clock when the schools let out, the Kwattaweg in the late afternoon, Friday evenings, and any street that floods in the long rainy season from April to August. These are the trips a driver prices up — and on Intra, you see the price before you accept, not at the end.

Check the car before you get in. Whatever you use, match the car and the driver to what you were told. On Intra the driver's name and photo and the car photo are on the offer you accepted.

You see your driver before you commit. Once an offer comes in, you know who's coming and roughly how far out they are, and you get a separate alert when the driver is actually outside.

We're still growing here. Intra Cab is new in Suriname, and the centrales have decades of head start. Requests in and around the Centrum usually get offers; late at night or out towards Lelydorp you may wait, or get none. Every driver who signs up shortens that wait.

Getting started

Open the app, set your pickup and destination, choose your vehicle type, and wait for offers from drivers nearby. Download Intra Cab and see what's available near you.
