Getting Around Lagos, Nigeria: Taxis, Cars, and Motorcycles Explained

Getting around Lagos has always meant a mix of options: yellow danfo buses, the BRT, keke tricycles, okada where they're still allowed, and the ride apps that most people on the Island and the mainland centre now reach for first. If you're new to the city, or you've lived here your whole life and are tired of pricing a trip through the window before you get in, here's a practical rundown of what's out there and where Intra Cab fits.

The traditional options

Danfo — the yellow minibuses — are the backbone of Lagos transport: cheap, everywhere, and fixed to their route. Fine if your trip lines up with one and you don't mind the conductor, the stops and the squeeze. The BRT on its own lanes along Ikorodu Road and from Oshodi to Abule-Egba is the orderly version, and the Blue Line and Red Line trains now cover a couple of corridors — good if you're going exactly where they go.

Keke (tricycles) do the short hops a bus won't, from the main road to your street, where they're permitted.

Okada (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest thing in Lagos traffic, but as of October 2026 they are banned outright in ten local government areas — Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, Eti-Osa (Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki Phase 1), Apapa, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu and Mushin — and on the expressways and bridges across the state. Bikes are impounded and crushed. In the outer LGAs — Alimosho, Agege, Ikorodu, Ojo, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki — they still run on inner roads.

Yellow cabs and hire cars get you door-to-door, but the price is a negotiation at the window, and it goes differently depending on whether the driver thinks you're a visitor, a regular, or in a hurry.

Ride apps — Bolt and inDrive, plus the state-backed LagRide — are how most people on the Island and in Ikeja now book a car. Uber left Nigeria in September 2026. The apps give you a fixed fare on a screen, which is a relief after the window negotiation, with the catch that the fare multiplies when it rains or when Third Mainland Bridge jams.

Where Intra Cab fits

Intra Cab brings car, motorcycle and bus into one app, with the negotiation already built in: drivers send you a naira price, you pick the one you want, no back-and-forth at the kerb and no surge multiplier.

  • Car — the default for most trips: door-to-door, room for luggage or more than one passenger.
  • Motorcycle — a solo rider's fastest option, but only where okada is legal. Request one in Ikeja, on the Island or in Surulere and nobody can lawfully answer; in Alimosho, Agege or Ikorodu inner roads, a bike can.
  • Bus — for groups travelling together who don't want to split into separate cars.

A few practical notes for Lagos

Cash is still king. Intra Cab is cash-only for now — you pay your driver directly in naira when the trip ends, the same way you would any Lagos taxi, just without the haggling.

Peak times matter. The bridge at 7am and 6pm, Lekki–Epe Expressway on a Friday evening, anything near Oshodi or Mile 2 in the rain — these are where a fixed-fare app multiplies and where, on Intra, drivers simply quote what the trip is worth and you decide.

You see your driver before you commit. Once an offer comes in, you see the driver's name, photo, vehicle and rating, and roughly how far out they are.

We've only just opened. Intra Cab arrived in Nigeria in October 2026 and is signing up its first Lagos drivers now. For a while, some requests — especially outside Ikeja, the Island and the mainland centre — will get few offers or none. Keep the app installed alongside the one you use today; every driver who joins sees your request.

Getting started

Open the app, set your pickup and destination, choose your vehicle type, and wait for offers from drivers nearby. If nothing comes in, try again later in the day or from a busier area — and if you drive, the other side of the app pays no commission.
