Getting Around Georgetown, Guyana: Taxis, Cars, and Moto-Bikes Explained

Georgetown is a low, flat, grid-shaped city where most people live within a few kilometres of the centre and almost nobody walks far in the midday heat. That makes it a city of short rides — and a city with a lot of ways to take one: minibuses with route numbers, hire cars with H plates, bases you call, moto-bikes, speedboats across the Demerara, and now a handful of ride apps. If you're new here, or you've lived here your whole life and are tired of pricing a trip on the pavement before you get in, here's a practical rundown of what's out there and where Intra Cab fits.

Minibuses

The minibus is the backbone of Georgetown transport and the cheapest way to go anywhere. Each route has a number, painted on the bus and shouted by the conductor: 40 runs the East Bank Public Road out to Diamond and Grove, 42 carries on to Timehri and the international airport, 44 runs the East Coast past Ogle to Mahaica, 45 goes to Linden, and 32 crosses the harbour bridge to Vreed-en-Hoop and Parika. Most leave from the parks around Stabroek Market and along the Avenue of the Republic, and a short drop within the city costs around a hundred Guyanese dollars.

They're cheap, frequent on the main roads, and fixed to their route — so they're good if your trip follows the East Bank or East Coast corridor and less good if you're going from one neighbourhood to another, carrying anything, or travelling after dark when they thin out. Expect to be squeezed in, and expect the music.

Hire cars and bases

A hire car — a private car licensed to carry passengers, identifiable by its H plate — is the Georgetown taxi. You find them at stands outside Stabroek and Bourda markets, at the hotels along Main Street and the Kingston seawall, and at the malls; or you call a base (a taxi service with a dispatcher) and they send someone.

Hire cars go door-to-door and run all night, and that's their strength. The weakness is the price, which is a conversation rather than a number: a short drop in town is usually somewhere in the hundreds of dollars, a run out to Cheddi Jagan at Timehri several thousand, and where exactly you land depends on the driver, the hour, the weather and whether you sound like you know what the trip is worth. If you use a base regularly you learn their rates. If you don't, you're negotiating at a disadvantage every time.

Moto-bikes

Georgetown traffic is slow in a few predictable places — Sheriff Street and Mandela Avenue, the East Bank road in the morning, the Railway Embankment and Rupert Craig Highway along the East Coast in the evening — and a bike threads through all of it. Motorcycle taxis are less established here than in some countries, but a solo rider with a short-to-medium trip will often get there faster on two wheels than four. Helmets are required for the rider and the passenger; a bike driver carrying passengers for money should have a spare.

Boats

For one specific trip — crossing the Demerara River — the fastest option isn't on the road at all. Speedboats run from the Stabroek stelling to Vreed-en-Hoop in a few minutes for a small fare, and beat the rush-hour queue for the bridge.

The ride apps

Guyana never had Uber, Bolt or Grab, so the apps here are local ones. RideGY quotes a fixed fare in advance and takes cash or card; Book A Ride is a smaller fixed-fare app; and Intra Cab works differently — you post the trip and drivers send you their own prices to choose from. There's a full comparison in ride-hailing apps in Guyana compared. The honest advice for all of them: install more than one, because on a given evening the deciding factor is which app has a driver near you.

Where Intra Cab fits

Intra Cab brings car, moto-bike and bus into one app with the negotiation already built in: drivers near you see your pickup and destination, send you a price in Guyanese dollars, and you pick the one you want — with the driver's name, photo, vehicle and rating alongside. There's no surge multiplier because no algorithm sets the price, and Intra takes no commission, so the driver keeps what you pay.

  • Car — the default for most trips: door-to-door, room for shopping or more than one passenger, and the right choice for the airport with luggage.
  • Moto-bike — a solo rider's fastest option at rush hour. Fewer bike drivers than car drivers are on the app, so a bike request can wait longer for an offer.
  • Bus — for a group travelling together who don't want to split into separate cars.

A few practical notes for Georgetown

Cash is still king. Intra Cab is cash-only for now — you pay the driver in Guyanese dollars when the trip ends, the same as any hire car, just with the price agreed before you got in.

Peak times matter. The East Bank between seven and half past eight in the morning, the East Coast from four in the afternoon, anything near Stabroek when the markets are busy, and the whole city after a heavy rain, when the kokers can't keep up and streets flood. These are the trips a driver prices up — and on Intra, you see that price before you commit, instead of discovering it at the end.

Check the car before you get in. Whatever you use, match the car and the driver to what you were told. On Intra the driver's name and photo and the car photo are on the offer you accepted.

You see your driver before you commit. Once an offer comes in, you know who's coming and roughly how far out they are — and you get a separate alert when the driver is actually at your door.

We're still growing here. Intra Cab is new in Guyana. Most requests in central Georgetown get offers, but late at night or well out of town you may wait, or get none. Keep the base number you already use; let Intra add an option on top.

Getting started

Open the app, set your pickup and destination, choose your vehicle type, and wait for offers from drivers nearby. Download Intra Cab and see what's available near you.
