Anyone who has stood outside Stabroek Market at five in the afternoon knows how a ride in Georgetown gets priced: you ask a hire-car driver how much to Diamond, he looks at you, looks at the traffic on the East Bank, and names a number that has more to do with how you look and how tired he is than with the trip. If you have a base you call, the base sets the price and takes its share. If you don't, you negotiate on the pavement.
Intra Cab is a ride-hailing app built to change that in Guyana. You post the trip, drivers nearby send you their price, and you pick the one you want — with the driver's name, photo, car and rating next to each offer. No surge, no black-box fare, and no commission: the driver keeps every Guyanese dollar you hand over.
Here's what it is, how it works in Georgetown specifically, how to sign up on either side, and an honest word on how busy it is right now.
What Intra Cab is
Intra Cab is a marketplace, not a taxi company. We don't own cars, employ drivers or set fares. Independent drivers — many of them the same people already driving hire cars with H plates, running a minibus on the East Coast, or picking up regulars by phone — sign up, see trip requests near them, and quote on the ones they want. Riders compare the quotes and choose.
Because no algorithm sets the price, there is nothing to surge. Because we don't take a cut, the driver has no reason to pad the fare to cover a platform's percentage. The price you see is the price the driver actually wants for that trip, and the price the driver gets.
How a Georgetown trip works
You post the trip. Open the app, set your pickup and your destination — Kitty to Stabroek, Giftland Mall back to Campbellville after a late film, Alberttown out to the airport at Timehri with two suitcases — and choose a car, a moto-bike or a bus. You'll see a reference estimate so you know roughly what a fair figure looks like before anyone quotes.
Drivers quote. Every eligible driver near you gets a notification and sees the pickup, the drop-off and how many people are riding. Each one who wants the trip sends a price in Guyanese dollars. A driver who knows the Railway Embankment is backed up to Ogle at this hour prices that in; one who is already heading your way can come in sharp.
You choose. Offers arrive with the driver's photo, vehicle, rating and distance from you. Take the cheapest, the closest, or the one with the best rating — your call. Then track the car on the map until it arrives, and get a separate alert when the driver is actually at your door, not just "nearby".
You pay the driver. Cash, when the trip ends, exactly as you'd pay any Georgetown taxi — but with the price agreed on the screen before you got in. Intra never touches the money.
Car, moto-bike or bus
- Car is the everyday choice: door-to-door anywhere from the seawall to Sophia, room for shopping or more than one passenger.
- Moto-bike is for a solo rider who would rather not sit on Sheriff Street or Mandela Avenue at rush hour. Both of you wear a helmet — it's the law in Guyana and the driver should have a spare. There are fewer bike drivers than car drivers on the app, so a bike request can take longer to get an offer.
- Bus is for a group that would otherwise split into two or three cars: a church outing, a crew heading to Providence for a match, a family going to Timehri with luggage.
Where it works
Intra Cab is live in Georgetown and the surrounding areas — the East Bank corridor through Houston, Eccles and Providence out to Diamond and the airport, the East Coast through Liliendaal, Ogle and Plaisance, and across the harbour bridge to Vreed-en-Hoop. You can post a request from anywhere in Guyana. Whether a driver answers depends on someone being near you at the time, and the further from the city you are, the longer that can take. Requests are only shown to drivers in Guyana; a trip posted in Georgetown never goes to a driver in Suriname.
Signing up as a rider
- Download the app and enter your phone number with the country code (+592). A one-time code arrives by WhatsApp or SMS — there's no password.
- Add your name, and a photo if you'd like the driver to recognise you at a busy pickup.
- Post your first trip. Riders don't need any further approval.
Signing up as a driver
Drivers go through a short verification so that riders know the person who arrives is the person on the profile:
- Sign in with your phone number the same way, and choose Driver.
- Take one selfie holding your driver's licence. The app reads the licence and checks the face matches. Riders only ever see a crop of your face — never the licence.
- Pick Car, Moto-Bike or Bus, set how many passengers you can take, and add a clear daylight photo of the vehicle. You can also add the registration and a photo of the plate so your profile is fully verified from day one.
- If the automatic check passes, you're approved within minutes and start seeing trips in Available Trips. If a photo can't be read, a person on our side looks at it rather than rejecting you.
The full checklist is in what you need to drive for Intra Cab. The legal side — a licence of the right class, a hire-car registration if the law requires one for paying passengers, insurance that covers them — stays yours; we check identity and vehicle, not permits.
Honest about where we are
Intra Cab is new in Guyana. There is not a driver on every corner yet, and some requests — late at night, or out past the city — will wait for an offer or get none. The sensible way to use it today is alongside the number you already call, not instead of it. Every driver who signs up shortens that wait for the next rider, which is why the drivers who join early matter most.
